Slow Down, Move Over
Everyone deserves a safe place to work.
Every year, tow truck drivers are injured or killed by passing vehicles. CAA believes that tow truck drivers have the right to safe working conditions. CAA has been the leading advocate in Canada to ensure that slow down move over laws include tow trucks, along with police, ambulance and fire.
Reduce your speed.
In 2011, the Slow Down Move Over law became part of Manitoba's Highway
Traffic Act. The law requires drivers to slow down and move over when
they see an emergency vehicle or tow truck pulled over on the side of
the road with its emergency lights flashing.
If the posted speed limit is less than 80 km/h you are required to slow down to 40 km/h.
If the posted speed limit is 80 km/h or higher you are required to slow down to 60 km/h.
It's the law.
When a tow truck is stopped on the side of the road with lights flashing, the Highway Traffic Act requires drivers to slow down and move over one lane on multi-lane roads, if it is safe to do so. Drivers must slow down to 60 km/h in 80 km/h or higher speed zones, or 40 km/h if the speed limit is less than 80 km/h.
Drivers who do not comply with this law can be ticketed with a hefty fine of $300 and two demerit points, up to a maximum limit of $2,000 and/or a one-year driver’s licence suspension issued by a judge.
