Buy & Sell Checklists
Let's make a deal.
Arrive at your local car dealerships ready to make a deal. When you’re looking for a new or used vehicle, CAA is there to assist. We can provide you with information you’ll need to make the right purchase.
New vehicle buying tips
- Determine what type of vehicle meets your needs and set a budget.
- Start gathering information on websites such as Consumer Reports or the Automobile Journalist Association of Canada (AJAC).
- Check CAA’s Driving Costs Calculator to determine expenses involved in operating a vehicle.
- Examine vehicle Crash Test Data on sites such as the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
- Take the vehicle for a test drive.
- Ensure you get everything, including promises made by a dealership, in writing.
- Be familiar with all costs associated with the purchase (taxes, pre-delivery inspection, freight charges).
- Read and understand the contract completely before signing.
- Inspect the vehicle before accepting it to ensure it’s satisfactory. If there are any defects you’re not happy with, don’t take delivery of the vehicle. Make sure to get dealer promises in writing.

Used vehicle buying tips
- Determine what type of vehicle meets your needs and set a budget.
- Your budget should include a repair fund. A used vehicle usually needs something.
- Gather pricing information. The Canadian Black Book or websites such as VMR Canada are good places to start.
- Get a vehicle history report to check for liens, past damage or repairs.
- Examine vehicle Crash Test Data on sites such as the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
- Take the vehicle for a test drive.
- Arrange for a CAA Vehicle Inspection. Be wary if the vehicle owner resists a vehicle inspection.
- Make the seller a reasonable offer, leaving some room for bargaining.
- Before signing an offer get the seller’s special conditions or promises in writing.
- Bring a copy of the CAA Bill of Sale with you.
